Multiphysics simulation is a numerical analysis that takes into account various fields of physics. At Saïna, we cover the fields of fluid dynamics (single- and multi-phase), thermal analysis and mechanics.
This coupling is essential to guard against any risk of damage to the system. For example, a mechanical assembly with a bolted joint tightened to a standard torque may lose its preload under the effect of a thermal load. The transfer of forces will be different and could potentially lead to failure.
In other fields, such as aeronautics or drones and UAVs, mass is crucial. A thorough understanding of the combined loads (aerodynamic, mechanical and thermal) will ensure a safe design whilst keeping mass to a minimum.
Here is an example of an analysis carried out on a fixed drone wing. This study presents an initial aerodynamic simulation incorporating a thermal component in order to assess the impact of airflow and temperature variations on the structure.
In a second stage, the entire wing structure is modelled by incorporating all structural elements, including spars, ribs and skins. This approach provides a detailed insight into the wing’s mechanical behaviour under various operational loads.
The results of this mechanical study will provide valuable information for validating the wing’s resistance to applied loads and identifying any potential weak points. Furthermore, these analyses will contribute to weight optimisation, thereby ensuring an optimal balance between lightness and robustness.
Thanks to these advanced simulations, it is now possible to refine the wing design to improve its in-flight performance, durability and energy efficiency, whilst meeting regulatory requirements and specific industrial constraints.
Modelling of the mechanical assembly, taking into account the system boundary conditions as well as aerodynamic loads on the left and thermal loads on the right.
Once the solution has been obtained, post-processing of the mechanical analysis incorporating all the loads can begin. Depending on the assumptions, optimisation iterations may be run on this final model.
